The Studio
By Sioph W. Leal
The Studio centres on the newly appointment head of Continental Studios Matt Remick (Seth Rogen) as the studio begins to fail. Thinking he can help as a self-described cinephile, Matt soon finds that balancing Continental Studio’s cooperate aims in an IP driven entertaining landscape with his own dreams of producing quality films is a constant war. The Studio is refreshingly candid, showcasing the chaotic ways of Hollywood filmmaking. It shows the comedic, satire side of Hollywood through the pressures and madness of what it takes to bring anything to the big screen.
When making a satire comedy, it’s important to be fearless and The Studio is that. As it delves into the inner workings of Hollywood and doesn’t offer the shiny, polished narratives that are so often portrayed within the media. It’s unfiltered and hilarious and the right amount of absurdity that will have you laughing out loud. The Studio works so well thanks to Seth Rogan’s comedic stylings, but also because it unashamedly doesn’t hold back on exposing the bizarre reality of the glorified entertainment industry.
Seth Rogan is known for his comedy and how his projects often push the bounds. The Studio works brilliantly as Rogan and his team clearly use their real-life experience of the industry to inform the narrative, but rather than it being an exposé of sorts, the comedic elements help make it an entertaining watch that manages to walk the line between celebratory and critique. It’s hilarious and fascinating with its ridiculousness.
A series about the Hollywood can’t be done without a stellar cast of cameos and The Studio does just that. Guest appearances from big names from Zoë Kravitz, Anthony Mackie and Steve Buscemi elevate The Studio effortlessly, as well as supporting characters like Maya (Katherine Hahn), Patty Leigh (Catherine O’Hara) and Quinn (Chase Sui Wonders) that help to add more comedy but also depth to this world. With great guest stars and cameos, The Studio shows off its connections without loosing the satire take it promised in the trailers.
The Studio is a fearless satire comedy that delves into the inner workings of Hollywood, avoiding the glossy narratives often portrayed in media.
