Best Shows of 2024
By Sioph W. Leal
There’s been a lot of TV this year. The best has been mostly adaptations or remakes but the new takes offer a refreshing look at some beloved material and translate it so it reaches a new audience or excites those that already love it. We’ve looked at some of our favourites of the year!
1) Interview with the Vampire season 2-
Covering the second half of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, the second series is nothing short of exceptional. Taking two seasons to delve deeper into the opening Vampire Chronicles book was the best move the series has made (aside from its stellar casting) to create fully realised characters with shades of grey and their own flaws and tragedies. More than that, it’s an exceptional show from a team that clearly loves the source material resulting in a visual masterpiece performance that gives some of the best acting of the decade from Jacob Anderson, Assad Zaman and Delainey Hayles. Hayles is a standout and a fully exceptional performer who was a replacement this season but made her mark on the entire universe of the series. The show delivers strength after strength and deserves to be number one on every end of year list and should be bringing in every possible. With the next season renewed and currently being written, the infamous Lestat will take centre stage in his rockstar era. Showrunner Rolin Jones and writers have proven their love, respect and capabilities of adapting these chronicles so we can’t wait to see the next instalment.
2) Kaos-
The cancellation of KAOS is one of the most egregious of the year. Not only was the show a visual delight but it took classic stories of Greek mythology that kept signature dark elements of the myths only to modernize and weave them together to create a quality story told by a great cast. It seemed Netflix didn’t give this a chance even though it was reviewed positively, and the audience seemed to love it. Being only one season is a shame but the season that exists is a great watch with a clear vision that’ll entertain at every point.
3) Fallout –
Video game adaptations are growing in quality and Fallout is a perfect example of that. It follows its own story set in the world created by the game franchise while offering a fresh perspective on post-apocalyptic genre. It finds a great balance by offering an original story in an established medium with new characters for old and new audiences to discover. The new characters are fun, embody the game without alienating new viewers and the cast make for a great watch. The reveal at the end of the first season easily sets up enough anticipation for the next season.
4) My Lady Jane –
Over the past few years, historical TV dramas have grown in popularity with many struggling to find a way to stand out. My Lady Jane manages to stand out with its comedic elements and alternate history and a little supernatural element to it. All of that combined with Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel’s electrifying chemistry, it’s not a surprise that My Lady Jane made this list. It has everything that period dramas have and more, with the modern, alternative twist that sets My Lady Jane apart from any other show of similar genre.
5) Rivals –
There’s a bit of everything in Rivals with hatred, lust, longing and competition and romance with characters of all shades of awful and perceptions of each other that border on cruel. Set in the 80s, Rivals packs in many pieces that gives you some fun escapism as you follow the bitter (and sometimes one-sided) rivalry between David Tennant’s Lord Tony Baddingham and Alex Hassell as the charming but licentious Rupert Campbell-Black. As soon as this series was released it had people clamouring for more and, thankfully, Disney obliged by announcing a second season.
2024 gave a lot with so many different genres to cover and we loved a lot of the series out here but these are our best picks. Here’s to a 2025 filled with just as good, if not better, TV!
